Questions answered

Does Black Friday Janitor have upgradeable abilities?
Yes. The official Steam description says abilities can be unlocked and janitorial skills strengthened.
What changed with Gather in v1.0.4?
The developer says Gather became much less likely to pull from another store for the few items shared across stores.

Black Friday Janitor uses progression to make a very large cleanup more manageable. The developer’s Steam description explicitly says that abilities can be unlocked and janitorial skills strengthened, but it does not publish a complete skill tree or numeric table.

That means this guide separates developer-confirmed mechanics from player-reported upgrade behavior instead of presenting community observations as official values.

What is officially confirmed?

The official store description confirms two things:

  • abilities can be unlocked;
  • janitorial skills can be strengthened to speed up cleanup.

The developer’s v1.0.4 patch notes also name one ability directly: Gather. The patch changed Gather so it is much less likely to pull from a different store when dealing with the few items shared across stores.

The Steam achievement list adds one more confirmed progression fact: Head Custodian is awarded for reaching the maximum level.

Public developer material does not currently provide a full numeric table for unlock levels, upgrade costs, maximum ranks, cooldowns or the exact maximum player level.

What do players report about the upgrade system?

Long-session Steam reviews describe upgrades that improve several practical parts of the cleanup loop, including carrying more items, moving faster, collecting more rubbish at once and summoning or gathering products.

Those reports are useful for route planning, but they are not a substitute for an official skill-tree table. A player may also describe an upgrade by its effect rather than its exact in-game name.

For this guide:

  • Gather is treated as a developer-confirmed ability name.
  • Trash collection, carrying and movement improvements are treated as player-reported mechanics unless the exact in-game label has been reproduced.
  • Numeric ranks and thresholds remain unlisted until they can be captured reliably.

How should you choose upgrades?

Choose upgrades around the task type that is causing repeated work.

Product-heavy store

If you spend most of the session walking back and forth with products, carrying and Gather-style improvements have the highest practical value. Use them to reduce travel, but keep the active work bounded to one store or department.

Rubbish-heavy area

If the route is dominated by trash, a stronger rubbish-collection workflow may save more time than a product ability. ABC Cinema is a good example because player reports describe it as a break from shelving with much more rubbish and spill cleanup.

Long travel route

Movement improvements become more valuable when your route repeatedly crosses large stores or mall corridors. They do not replace good route planning; faster backtracking is still backtracking.

Mixed store

When all task types are present, prioritize whatever removes the most repeated actions. The cleaning guide gives you a four-pass route that makes the bottleneck easier to identify.

How should you use Gather?

Gather is most useful when you already understand the local destination.

A safer workflow is:

  1. choose one store or department;
  2. identify the shelf group you are currently solving;
  3. use Gather within that bounded context;
  4. place the collected items;
  5. resolve uncertain items before moving to another store.

Patch v1.0.4 reduced cross-store pulling for shared items, but the developer did not say that cross-store selection became impossible. Do not treat every gathered item as automatic proof of its destination.

The organization guide explains how to keep obvious, likely and unknown products separate.

What does leveling change?

Leveling matters because abilities become stronger as the run progresses and the achievement list includes a maximum-level goal. What is not yet responsibly documented is the exact XP curve.

Player reports describe a noticeable mid-game progression period and increasingly powerful upgrades later in a run, but individual reviews are not enough to publish a definitive level-by-level table.

For now, use level changes as checkpoints:

  • note which upgrade became available;
  • record the current rank;
  • test it in a familiar store;
  • compare the number of trips or actions required;
  • update your route only when the difference is clear.

Should you save large stores until later?

Often, yes—if efficiency matters. Player reports repeatedly describe Gilberts and Peers as very large product-sorting jobs, and several players prefer them after stronger abilities are available.

That is advice, not a requirement. You can enter them early if those stores are the part of the game you enjoy most.

What information should a future full ability table contain?

A reliable versioned table should capture:

Field What should be recorded
Ability name Exact in-game label
Unlock condition Level or other requirement
Rank Current upgrade rank
Cost Points or currency required
Effect Exact visible behavior
Range/capacity Numeric value if the UI exposes it
Cooldown Numeric value if applicable
Game version Build/patch used for the test

Until that data can be reproduced, the wiki avoids publishing guessed values.

Evidence and limitations

Developer-confirmed: abilities exist and can be strengthened; Gather is an ability named in v1.0.4; Gather was changed to reduce cross-store selection; Head Custodian requires maximum level. Player-reported: stronger carrying, movement, trash pickup and late-run ability power. Not confirmed here: complete official ability list, exact unlock order, costs, rank caps, cooldowns or the numeric maximum player level.
